Security is derived from multiple layers of security that fall within the 4D's of security: 
(D)eterrence, 
(D)etect, 
(D)eny, and 
(D)efeat. 
The metal detector acts as a (D)eterrent.  

Cameras with intelligent software act as the (D)etect. Access control (locks, single point of entry, etc) and bullet resistant glass (e.g. BallistiMax) act as (D)eny. Finally, it usually takes an armed individual to (D)efeat the gunman. Each (D) helps reduce the probability of a fatality in the event of a mass shooting.
